Review: Nell Hill's Rooms We Love by Mary Carol Garrity

Nell Hill's Rooms We Love
Nell Hill's Rooms We Love by Mary Carol Garrity
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Truly inspirational ideas for someone as decorating-challenged as myself.

A wish-book come true! In Nell Hill's Rooms We Love, decorating maven Mary Carol Garrity coaches readers on how to affordably decorate rooms they will fall in love with. Named "One of America's hottest little retailers" by Fortune magazine, Mary Carol Garrity's mini empire of three decor stores are a Midwest regional phenomenon and have become landmarks in the decorating world. In Nell Hill's Rooms We Love, we will see Mary Carol apply her Nell Hill’s principles of design to new challenges. Even though design styles and trends have changed significantly since Nell Hill's Style at Home, Mary Carol’s first book ten years ago, the rules that guide her approach to decorating have not. In this book, we will rediscover those principles at work in four very different houses, in addition to her own home.

I am constantly on the hunt for decorating ideas. I have bought countless magazines, books and such, even gone to the extent of signing up with online decorating sites just to get those ideas. Some are truly inspirational, most are great disappointments. Nell Hill's Rooms We Love thankfully inspires me to make use of my own stuff and start decorating.

One of my faults as a homeowner is never having a vision in terms of decorating. I usually leave that task to either my kids, my hubby, my mother-in-law (a gem of a decorator mind you!) or my sister-in-law (one who has the vision to turn a rag into a rug). I am lazy, I have to admit but then again, I did try in the past and those  family I mentioned  practically cringed at my disastrous attempts and simply took a hand and re-did everything. Take it this way: I cannot envision my home with walls painted other than white. Then I get surprised when colors attract me. Go figure.

The reason behind my buying all the help I need is to look for a decorating idea that will help me visualize my home the way it should be decorated. My mother-in-law (let's call her mami from now on) once told me as she was going through my stuff that I had great items in my collection. Only problem is, I never bother to place them the way they should, or worse, I never remove them from the boxes they came in. Disastrous! Since the time she said this to me over ten years ago, mami has managed to re-do my homes five times. Yes, she is a gem!

So when books like Garrity's Nell Hill's Rooms We Love came along, I took the chance to request from Netgalley an ARC so I could use it for my own personal needs (I am currently in the works of waiting for my second home to be built and I have absolutely no idea on what to do with the interiors). Needless to say, this was a truly inspirational book as the images (I did not bother reading the text) showed me furnishings and knick-knacks that I already own. It's just that I never thought to do them the way they were done here. (Note:I have managed to bookmark quite a few and yes, those pages I did bookmark I read the text.)

This is a truly inspirational decorating guide book, at least from my point of view, and I am going to recommend it to the women in my family who may not need it, but need another view on how things are done.

Review based on an ARC sent by Netgalley.
