My Rating: 4 of 4 Stars
(Based on Short&Light Read Category)

This is a short story with a whole lot of punch to it. It is short, sweet, and heavy duty. No pun intended. This is a story that makes us think of what we say or what we think we say without realizing how it could affect those who hear it. We don't mean to be cruel, but yes, we are and we continue to be. And the words destroy.

Mat had been fat since day one and his parents did not help. One, they kept feeding him. Two, they kept feeding him, letting him feed and just made him do so without education. Three, once he got fat, they started calling him names, insulting him, putting him down, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera. The end result? Well, anyone who can think knows that one defense mechanism is to shut down and eat. Heck, that's what I do! When stressed out, I eat. But for Mat, everyday and everyone is a trigger for stress and the looks of condemnation and unsolicited judgements, well, they stressed. Until one day, Mat says: enough. Takes courage, and registers with a group whose members help each other out lose the weight the right way and without judgement. The starting point: weigh in and loose so many pounds to make Johnny smile.

So, just who is Johnny? He looks like the perfect specimen that make men and women both drool over. But for some reason, Johnny only has eyes for Mat and Mat does not know why. But he is not asking. He is not complaining. Everyone in the group said both were made for each other.

Are they really?

As things go to a head, revelations open Mat's eyes and he questions if Johnny really is the perfect specimen?

This was such a fast and lovely read. There were bittersweet moments too that made me smile and just ... well, smile. This book opens our eyes to such a common modern day occurrence: obesity.

Yes, even men like Mat and Johnny need some loving too. No matter from whom. Or with whom.

Lovely, lovely, lovely.
