Life isn't always fair, and that’s something that Llewellyn Gardner knows about first hand. His life was on the fast track until one night of extreme passion changed everything. Now eight years later, he’s still living with the aftershocks of that night. Everywhere he turns or runs, there’s another reminder. What the hell do you do when you try to drown your demons only to find out they can swim? Shane Smith, Jr. owner of Smith Construction, could see the emotional turmoil within his new employee — it’s why he hired him. There was something about the gorgeous, misunderstood man with the overly expressive eyes that came to their small town with a past no one was willing to overlook. Shane could see the good in Llewellyn, and those eyes of his were a clear window to his soul. Shane wasn't going to let the man live a future of solitude because his past had been plagued with deceit. Llewellyn wasn’t sure what to think about Shane. After years of protecting himself from being tricked twice, he was now faced with worry again. What would happen to him if Shane didn’t believe his truth, and walked away? Llewellyn wasn’t sure he’d be able to survive being left alone. Again.

This was so freaking good! Well, that's a given as this is a Via and she writes great books with characters so tangible, they are impossible to forget.
This is the story of how one young man's dreams and potential are nipped in the bud because of fear. Llewellyn's best friend and boyfriend betrayed him to the extent that he is convicted and jailed for ten years. In prison, he nearly gives up but for one man who made him see that if he joins in his gang, not only will he survive the hell he lived in, he could have a future. When Llew is released on parole, his brother tries to get him back into the community but fails. The people who threw him in prison are still around. What is he to do but try to move on?
Shane Smith, Jr. saw something in Llew's eyes and knew that this was someone he wanted, needed, to help so he offers him a job which, thankfully, is accepted. As Shane got to know who Llew really was, he realizes that this is a man who needed a break and a support group to get him back on his feet again. As he slowly fell in love with the gentle giant, Shane realizes that he will do everything he could to make sure his Llewell gets the chance he deserves and more. Even if it means going against everyone to make it happen.
I really just fell in love with Llewellyn. He is a survivor who learned the hard way that life will throw a left hook unexpectedly. Although bitterness ran deep, he also knew that if he allowed that to rule his life, he would never be happy. With Shane by his side, Llew learned forgiveness and experience a love given unconditionally by someone other than his older brother.
A friend asked me if this is a sexy book for I was waxing poetic over how good this story was to her and I said, heck! this is a Via so definitely, it is better than sexy. It is also very romantic. I think this is one of Adrienne's best work so I cannot recommend it enough.
