Today, we welcome Lynn Michaels to the Author In Focus portion of the blog. Here's a little bit about her.
Lynn Michaels lives and writes in Tampa, Florida where the sun is hot and the Sangria is cold. When she’s not writing she’s kayaking, hanging with her husband, or reading by the pool. Lynn writes Male/Male romance because she believes everyone deserves a happy ending and the dynamics of male characters can be intriguing, vulnerable, and exciting. She has both contemporary and paranormal titles and has been writing since 2014. Her stories don’t follow any set guidelines or ideas, but come from her heart and contain love in many forms.
Now the introduction's done and over with, let me get settled in my chair so we can start the interview...
First off, tell us a little about yourself.
Hi, I’m Lynn Michaels. I live in Tampa, FL and I write MM Romance.
What was that WTF moment that inspired you to write that first time?
There were two things that really made me want to write. The first was not liking how a good book ended and the second was not wanting a good book to end. I figured if I was re-writing in my head, I ought to just write my own story.
How long have you been writing?
Trick question. I started writing in elementary school. But, publishing? I started publishing short stories about 15 years ago – WOW, that’s a long time! Then, I started writing and publishing novels seriously over the past three or four years. So, I’ve been writing forever, but I just started. I’m an enigma.
What advice would you give a new writer just starting out?
Learn to edit and don’t be afraid to ask for help. You really can’t publish alone.
Oh! good advise. I've read so many books. I agree, editing is key to a good read.
Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? If so, what do you do about it?
I think we all do. Mostly it’s when I’m starting to burn out. I take a break – get out of the office, away from the laptop. I try to get outside. A walk, a swim in the pool, or even just coffee on the porch. It always helps to get a literal breath of fresh air.
As a reader, what author or genre do you read? Who would you recommend?
MM Romance mostly. I like all sub-genres and tropes. I read everything.
What comes first, the plot or characters? What triggers your plot bunnies?
It varies. Usually the bunnies start bouncing around when I’m working on something. Suddenly, a character is in my head demanding attention. I also get inspired by taking little things from here and there and doing a What IF.. What if this or that and then I start plotting and the characters just kind of show up.
Describe the perfect writing space.
Some sunshine, a laptop, and PLENTY of coffee... and no interruptions.
If you do research for your books, how much or how far would you go to get that itsy bitsy detail?
It depends. I can get carried away. But, I like to know that my stories are probable if not possible, so I do research a lot.
How many books have you written? Do you have a favorite? If yes, which one and why. If no, why not?
Oh – and now I have to count... As Lynn Michaels... published books are...5 novels, 4 novellas, and a short story. And a contribution to a poetry anthology. That’s as of this moment...My favorite is Lines On The Mirror. I think it has the most depth, the most literary merit, and is probably the darkest. Wanton is second, because Corey is probably the most broken. I seem to like broken, dark, and vulnerable guys.
What are you currently working on now? You can refuse to answer on the grounds that it’s TOP SECRET at the moment.
Haha... not top secret. Time for Love is with Beta readers now. That one is about a philosopher and a police specialist (smart but tough guy) and it’s sexy, cute, and fun. I’m also writing a demon story. Demons are fun and bad...and fun.
Do you use a pen name? Or two? Maybe three? (Can you tell us why you have more than one?)
Lynn Michaels is my pen name. I also write under my real name (Sherri Jordan-Asble, 3 published paranormal adventure novels). I like the separation for marketing/branding. Lynn Michaels is MM and the other mostly not. I haven’t been secret with it at all. Some people do, but I’m just too open.
Do you have a playlist for any of your book(s)? If so, list which title and the link and I’ll share with that book.
