Review: Lover At Last (Black Dagger Brotherhood, #11) by J.R. Ward (originally posted: Mar 27, 2013)

Lover At Last (Black Dagger Brotherhood, #11)Lover At Last by J.R. Ward
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The Blurb:

Qhuinn, son of no one, is used to being on his own. Disavowed from his bloodline, shunned by the aristocracy, he has finally found an identity as one of the most brutal fighters in the war against the Lessening Society. But his life is not complete. Even as the prospect of having a family of his own seems to be within reach, he is empty on the inside, his heart given to another....

Blay, after years of unrequited love, has moved on from his feelings for Qhuinn. And it’s about time: The male has found his perfect match in a Chosen female, and they are going to have a young—just as Qhuinn has always wanted for himself. It’s hard to see the new couple together, but building your life around a pipe dream is just a heartbreak waiting to happen. As he’s learned firsthand.

Fate seems to have taken these vampire soldiers in different directions... but as the battle over the race’s throne intensifies, and new players on the scene in Caldwell create mortal danger for the Brotherhood, Qhuinn finally learns the true definition of courage, and two hearts who are meant to be together... finally become one.

My reaction:

I have been following the Black Dagger Brotherhood series for years. Every single time one book was announced to be published, I was just too jumpy to stay put to get to get my hands on  that next installation.

When Lover At Last was announced last year that it was going to be published Mar 2013, I was literally at the edge of my seat, looking out for that miracle to happen that maybe, just maybe, Ms Ward would have the book released sooner. Of course, it did not help that everywhere I went or looked, everyone was asking me the same thing: When?

So I finally got the book, and did not sleep till I had to literally pry my eyes open to get to the end. It did not work. I was just too tired and sleepy, and anyways, it was 3 a.m. so its understandable.

Well, I finished the book. I found that this was a LEAP on the part of Ms Ward. In the best and most successful way.

I have to be honest, I was always disappointed when she wrote books that did not focus on these two beautiful characters. They were men, so it was not the path that Ms Ward would take, or so everyone thought. Well, she did finally take a leap and took that divergent path, and she did not fail. THANK YOU!

The book is splendidly written it just positively took my mind off the heat and pulled me into the world of the Black Dagger world. There were the usual suspects as well as new characters. And this is the real talent of Ms Ward. She has created a world so convoluted that it is impossible to not continue reading so as not to get lost. (I tried to recap myself and took to wikipedia, so please do not strangle me.)

There were some moments when I was giggling from reading all of the slang and commentaries of Qhuinn, I especially loved this one: Hellllllllo wall! when he was slammed against it just prior to his induction (Spoiler Alert!!! Yes, he does get inducted into the fraternity of the Black Dagger)

As for the male/male content? I was not disappointed.

I am not one who likes erotica of any genre written chapters long while the development of the characters and plot are sacrificed. This is an MM romance about Qhuinn and Blay that finally, finally gets its happily ever after. (I must confess, I did skip over to the end of the book and read the Epilogue, so hang me!)This has just the right amount of sex and blood and gore that not a single thing was sacrificed. To be honest, the books of Wrath and Zsadist? They were considerably more erotic than this will ever be.

I am very happy I finally finished this one, it sort of closes a chapter for me on the Blay and Qhuinn issue or non-issue. They get their HEA, I am grinning like crazy, and yes, because it is an HEA, I will be reading it again come vacation time which is tomorrow for me.

Now, I really need to know: what happens next?

I know Ms. Ward will continue to write her amazing stories. I just ask for one thing: Please? Can you please, Ms. Ward, publish it sooner rather than next year, whatever it is or whoever your next book is about? Spare me from my sleepless nights of anticipating your next works.

And with that, I am off for my vacation, and taking the whole Black Dagger Brotherhood Series with me - yes, they are all hardbound!
