My Rating: 4 of 5 Stars

After barely surviving a shootout in New Orleans, Sidewinder medic Kelly Abbott has to suffer through a month of recovery before he can return home to Colorado. He’s not surprised when fellow Sidewinder Nick O’Flaherty stays with him in New Orleans. Nor is he surprised when Nick travels home with him to help him get back on his feet—after all, years on the same Marine Force Recon team bonded the men in ways that only bleeding for a brother can. He’s very surprised, though, when Nick humors his moment of curiosity and kisses him.

Nick knows all of Kelly’s quirks and caprices, so the kiss was a low-risk move on his part . . . or so he thought. But what should’ve been a simple moment unleashes a flood of confusing emotions and urges that neither man is prepared to address.

Now, Kelly and Nick must figure out what they mean to each other—friends and brothers in arms, or something even deeper?—before the past can come back to ruin their tenuous future.

I am one of those who have followed the Cut & Run series written by this amazing writer, Abigail Roux. I was very excited to finally get to have a chance to read about Ty's team, the Sidewinder and when Shock & Awe came out? Let's just say I was in lalaland somewhere in the middle of nowhere and only just now realized it had been out for quite some time. So, yes, I did finally read it. Last night, all night in bed.

What I loved about this book, is the length. For a novella, this one packs a wallop! There is action, there is humor, there is the usual rising of the male ego and there is the romantic/erotic love between two male males. And no, contrary to what some thought, this is not a gay-for-you thing.

Kelly's curiousity about being with a man had been bothering him for some time. Not just any man, mind you. It is always Nick, his best friend and fellow Sidewinder teammate. So when Kelly gets his chance, he does kinda grab it. Thing is, he's recovering from a shootout and Nick is taking care of him. In more ways than one. One thing for certain, when they finally do get on with their dance? Whoa! Scorching HOT!

But as all Sidewinder thing goes, the government makes a mess out of their lives. Including Ty's and Zane's life. This is that same interference which got those two men's relationship on a hold totally breaking their and all the fans' hearts. Including mine. And if it messes them up, it also messes up Nick's and Kelly's. Kelly's in particular for he does not get to go back with his team.

Nick's protective instinct was on full force when he did something he shouldn't have: made sure that Kelly never gets to go back to the team and dodging bullets. He made sure Kelly will survive, even if he should not. Of course, this breaks Kelly's heart.

In the meanwhile, their short novella story continues on with Bait & Switch, a short, shorty story about Ty and Zane and how their life has changed to something way different than they (or the fans for that matter) imagined. This little input sets us fans into full attention for it hints of what the next book for that particular series will be all about.

All in all, Abigail Roux is still amazing in her writing. She still gives us that hotness between men. She still manages to get her readers overimaginative and dreaming. She still manages to give us the witty dialogues that are typical to her characters.
