Blog Tour & ARC Review:Once Bitten, Twice Shy (Book 2 of the Bitten Series) by C. C. Wood

Once Bitten Twice Shy
by C.C. Wood

I used to think that my life was boring. I resigned myself to the rut I was stuck in. Then my entire existence was turned upside down.

In the last six months, I’ve learned things that would get me committed to an asylum if I repeated them. First, I was kidnapped by vampires. Yes, vampires. Sounds crazy, right? My best friend, Donna, became one of the fanged after that little adventure and hooked up with a hot, Scottish vampire named Conner. They’re even planning a wedding.

Secondly, I learned not all vampires are evil. In fact, some of them are downright sexy.

Alexander Dimitriades has it all. He’s tall, dark, and handsome and manages to give me tingles in all the right place and also make me laugh. Unfortunately, to be with him, I would have to give up my humanity and I like being human. Then, there’s the fact that the whole drinking blood thing gives me the heebie jeebies.

To make matters worse, there are plans in motion to change the place vampires hold in the human world. And I’m caught in the middle, between the vampire I’m falling in love with and a group that wants to create a vampire dictatorship, with humans as slaves.

Now, all I want is my calm, normal life back. As my friend, Ricki, likes to say, “Be careful what you wish for because it might come and bite you on the ass.” I hate it when she’s right.

My Review
My Rating: 4 of 5 Stars

Despite the fact I read Once Bitten, Twice Shy as a stand-alone, it was enjoyable for me. Although I will say I would have probably enjoyed it more if I had read the first one since it made numerous mention of what previously happened. But, it still had no bearing on the events in this book so it can totally work by itself.

I don't normally read paranormal romances since there are quite a few that I find cheesy (and I refuse to mention which ones they are), or have extremely unbelievable basis, or pure and simple variations of much older novels. While I found some similarities - which is normal - this has a spin all its own. Neither is it usual for me to find a romance with a dark premise written in a light, fun manner so while the storyline is a bit heavy and somewhat bloody, it's the lighthearted relationship between Lex and Ivie that shines through.

What hooked me into reading was C. C. Wood portraying her paranormal heroes as Doms. Alpha males? Sweet beyond belief? Phht. Been there, read that. Not that many authors would do Doms even if it's a role that would be entirely believable for a vampire, or other supernatural being.

"Greek god" Alexander is a dream man with the added plus of being a vampire. He's loving, caring, and dominating without being domineering. In short, even if he didn't make Ivie salivate with his good looks, just the way he acts should make her fall in love with him. For me, a fantastic partner is one whose inner self is more beautiful than the outer and Lex embodies that perfectly. He does have shortcomings, of course, but well ... they make life interesting.

Ivie is working through her trauma from a vampire attack that happens in the first book and it's quite ironic that she falls for a vampire despite having nightmares about psychotic bloodsuckers. It doesn't help that there is that certain electricity that draws them together despite her better judgement, either.

Working through their D/s relationship takes up a lot of the book and as soon as it reaches the climax, I was left with a cliffhanger of an ending that turns out to actually be the beginning of the next book! I now have to admit I got reeled into this series specifically because of this hook, so now I am left in limbo until I get my hands on the next installment.

About The Author

A native Texan, C.C. grew up either reading or playing the piano. Years later, she’s still not grown up and doing the same things. Since the voices in her head never shut up, C.C. decided to try and profit from their crazy stories and started writing books.

Now that she has a baby girl at home, C.C.’s non-writing time is usually spent cleaning up poopy diapers or feeding the poop machine. Sometimes she teaches piano, cooks, or spends time bugging her hubby and two beagles.
