Emma Elliot first developed a love of suspense when she was six years old. She was hiding from her cousins and sister in a closet in her grandmother's house when she discovered a passageway, though not so secret, linking to another closet. She stumbled upon a stack of worn Bobbsey Twins mysteries in that seeming labyrinth, and she spent much of her childhood there, by choice, reading mystery novels by flashlight. Her love of reading and writing grew simultaneously. Soon she was creating her own variations of the stories she read and penning her own tales. Through bouts of working as a tutor, an editor, an apple- and peach-picker, a waitress, a dog walker, a nanny, a retail associate, and a reservationist at a ski resort, writing has remained her passion. She currently lives on the eastern seaboard and considers herself a wandering homebody. She travels often for work, which provides fodder for the imagination and plentiful hours to write her next novel while sitting in airports.

When their plane goes down in the wilds of Canada, Finch Rhodes’ and Clay Gandy’s lives become entwined. Forced to rely on one another to survive, they forge a bond of friendship that lasts even after they are rescued. But upon returning home, it becomes clear the struggle to stay alive has only just begun.
With her life in jeopardy and danger blurring the lines between friend and foe, Finch must decide if those she loves are the ones she can trust, or if the greatest peril lurks closer to home than she could have ever imagined.
When I was sent Emma Elliot's ARC of As Darkness Gathers, I was interested but didn't really expect too much. Mystery and romance, right. Probably another one of those fluffy books. About a quarter of the way in, I had to admit I was wrong!
Finch is one of those women you'd want as a friend. She's kind, smart, accepting, and an all around beautiful person. She has two close sisters from other mothers, a loving family, and a job as a stewardess that she loves. She's living her dream life, except for one thing - her boyfriend. After she decides they're not quite right together, she tries to adjust to her new singleness.
On her next flight, she meets Clay, one of the passengers. She feels a bit of a pull, a spark, when their eyes meet. Cliché, but still romantic. What's not cliché, however, is what happens next. Their plane crashes and the only ones strong enough to get help are Clay, Finch, and a teenager, Timothy, who is familiar with that certain area of the Canadian wilds.
Battling snow, wildlife, and nature, they manage to survive and get a search party for the rest of the surviving passengers. While they are recuperating, they were quite glad their ordeal was over - until they return home.
Finch is subjected to attack after attack and the only person she can turn to with whom she feels safe is Clay. They piece together the clues to find who is responsible for the escalating attacks on Finch and they succeed; or do they?
While it's decidedly not a gritty espionage, there is that degree of suspense that keeps you on edge the entire length of the novel. And there is not one, but a whole truckload of red herrings that lead you away from the true criminal. And they're not distracting but expertly woven into the story.
And Ms Elliot knows how to shoot a handgun! Well, if she doesn't, she did her research well. While what she described is common among actual practitioners, there are quite a few that think what comes out on tv and movies is correct: cradling the gun's butt in the palm of the opposite hand from the trigger finger's. I'm ecstatic she got that detail right.
With As Darkness Gathers, Emma Elliot has proven that the "Erotica Function Key" need not be pushed in order to create a terrific, compelling, and interesting novel. This is a blend of Mystery and sweet Romance in the highest degree and I'm so privileged to have been able to read it. Now to search for that perfect cupcake...
