Release Day Blitz, eARC Review + Excerpt: Burst Into Flame (Burning Lovesick, #2) by Lyssa Layne

Lyssa Layne is first, and foremost, the proud momma to her precious daughter, AR. In addition to working full-time and being a mommy to AR, she is also an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan, a runner, blogger, and an infertility survivor.
Having watched one too many medical dramas and being inspired by author
RachelleAyala, who introduced her to the world of indie writing, Lyssa decided to try her hand at writing a romance story. Her attempt turned into the Burning Lovesick series. You can find Lyssa’s own interests throughout her stories although all stories are fictional.

“In everyone's life, at some time, our inner fire goes out. It isthen burst into flame by an encounter with another human being. We should allbe thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit.”

-Albert Schweitzer

ForDr. Katy Garrity, life is a whirlwind, and the New York Fire Department is theheart of the storm. After claiming so many people she loved, including her ownhusband, Katy is left adrift, trying to keep up with a busy career, a baby son,and her loving extended family. Her only anchor is Jesse O'Neil, her latehusband's best friend. The charming former playboy has put his entire life onhold to care for Katy and her son. It's inevitable that sparks will flarebetween them, but all of life seems to be conspiring to keep them apart.Especially Katy's own heart, which shies away from trusting anotherfirefighter. Will the flames of passion burst into a lifetime of love? Or willsecrets burn away their connection, causing Dr. Garrity to be burned again?

Jesse crumbled the cup in his hand and tossed it on the ground. When he turned around, Patrick Doyle ran into him. Shoving Doyle against the fire truck, Jesse fisted his shirt and moved his face within inches of the other man’s. “Watch where you’re going, asshole.”

Immediately, Lieutenant Dan Murphy, or Murph as the guys called him, pulled Jesse off the younger
fireman. “Come on, O’Neil, let him go.”

Doyle avoided making eye contact with Jesse just like he always did since the accident. The accident that Doyle caused that killed his best friend, Nick Garrity. It had been over a year ago, but Jesse hadn’t let it go and he wasn’t sure he ever would. The whole situation pissed him off — losing his best friend, watching Katy’s heartbreak, and knowingher son was being raised without a father. Jesse shoved Doyle one more time then walked away before he did something he would regret.

Murph followed him and patted his back. “Jesse, you’re going to have to let it go.”

Jesse spun around to face Murph, his eyebrows furrowed and anger seethed in his eyes. “Let it go? He’s responsible for killing the best firefighter Engine 58’s ever seen! We should have let him quit when he asked.”
Murph shook his head. “You don’t mean that. Garrity put his life on the line for that kid. If he quit then, Nick he would have done it for no reason. It’s our job now to make him one of the best we have on our crew.” Murph clamped his hand on Jesse’s shoulder and squeezed tightly. “Jesse, you need to do this for Nick.”

My Rating:  4.5 out of 5 stars

There was no question that Love is a Fire, Lyssa Layne's previous book, would have a sequel and I was ecstatic when we were sent the ARC of Burst Into Flame to review. Would it end the way I thought it would? Was there a chance for Jesse to prove himself to Katy and overcome the obstacles of work and family?

Katy is such a strong woman who was able to cope with the sudden loss of a husband, the unexpected birth of their son, and the stress of being a single working mother. Without Jesse being there 24/7, it would have been much harder. But when he drops a huge bomb and confesses his love for her, everything changes yet again.

Jesse is a man torn. While he wants to remain faithful to the memory of his best friend Nick, he can't deny the feelings he has for Katy. It doesn't help that Nicky thinks of him as his daddy, either. It's a forbidden relationship, though, since the widows of the fallen firemen are off limits to their brothers. How can Jesse reconcile all this? And what is the secret he's been hiding for years that can potentially tear them apart?

Ms Layne has a penchant for writing stories whose endings, while expected, are arrived at by extremely unlikely paths. I was kept on the edge the whole time, not knowing exactly how either Katy or Jesse would react, and unsure of who she chooses until the last three pages.

Her characters are all real, flawed, and human.  Despite their strength, all of them show their insecurities, lash out in anger, or are just plain tactless at times. Not one is one-sided or a complete sinner or saint, which makes the story something anybody could relate to.

Are the rumors right, though? Is there going to be a book where Patrick Doyle is finally able to redeem himself and make up for the accident that cost Nick's life? I hope so! He must be one miserable man at this point!

Lyssa Layne has created a beautiful, heartfelt sequel in Burst Into Flame that sparks a few laughs and sheds a few tears while giving you unexpected twists and turns. She's going to be on my book radar for quite a long while.
