My Rating: Each book as rated below.

This is my first taste of Pulp Friction and to be honest, I wondered how this would work. How I read the books was to get all the released books and read them back to back. As I got through the first half, I wondered how on Earth the editor is going to make this work, with four different authors writing about one arc and make the timeline work, the characters interact and of course, how to make the plot develop for each book that would make them finally cohese by the fifth round or twenty books total. By the third book, I have to laud the editor. This was a challenging project and so far, it freaking works!

The world hasn't been the same since the preternaturals came out of the closet. Much to many people’s chagrin, strange beings of all kinds are making life tricky for the "normals." Physics professor Dr. Sabine Brusilov has been obsessed with ghost hunting since he was eight years old.. He's gathered a wealth of knowledge, but can't produce a shred of scientific proof. One hundred and seventy-five years of death haven't done riverboat gambler Barton Montoire a damn bit of good. He's still rash, impulsive, and prone to fits of temper and bouts of melancholy. You'd think that when fate brought the two of them together, Bart's lonely spirit would be calmed, and Sabine would have the proof his heart desires. In a world where mythical beings are real, love is still the most elusive… and treacherous myth of them all.

My Rating: 3 of 4 Stars (Based on Short&Light Read Category)

The story of Sabine and Barton is the one that gave me most trouble. Maybe because the cast of characters are just being introduced for the first time and the time frame jumps from past to present to something else. This opens with Sabine in an established relationship with the ghost Bart who is still coming to terms with who he is and controlling his physical form which is unbalanced and uncontrollable at best. The two men struggle with their own problems but come together when they can.

Why did I struggle with this book? It is because it introduces everything all at once and the world is complicated. However, by the second half of the story, I got the flow of things and settled.

In a world where supernatural creatures openly exist, who can blame them for coalescing in one of the most fascinating and erotic places on earth? Welcome to New Orleans.
Laurant likes sex...
Maybe that’s an understatement, pleasures of the flesh are more than enjoyment, they’re a necessity. He’d starve without them. Problem is, he isn’t attracted to women, and in his family, if you get your sex from men, you’re the wrong type of demon. The (unfortunate) life of an incubus isn’t all orgies and orgasms.
That life is about to get a lot more interesting, though, when he catches sight of a lost and alone human who definitely needs his help…doesn’t hurt that he’s hot as the NOLA summer with just as many mysteries about him.
A stranger to himself...
What are you supposed to do when you blink your eyes and realize you have no idea who or where you are? Pretty sure the answer isn’t trust a sex demon with your life…all things considered that may be the lesser of two evils…

Laurant is another fave of mine in this world. He is an incubus but he is also the most in need of love and attention. Ironic isn't it?

He meets Vic, short for Victim. A man who woke up not knowing who he was or what he was and he almost gets into trouble but thankfully is saved by Laurant who truly is confused why he is spurred on by the need to help this unknown man. He even brings him over to the weekly poker game where we the other characters meet to relax and have just a bit of fun. Again, this ends in a cliffhanger and we really don't get to know what happens. Well, until book 2 of King of Hearts, that is.

Detective Ben Nelson’s chilling new case involves seemingly unconnected people—men, women, children—who disappear from their beds and are later found beaten to death. When evidence leads to an offhand comment about voodoo, Ben refuses to acknowledge the possibility of a supernatural element…until his boss orders him to visit a seer named A. Middleton or hand the case over to the Odd Squad—the federal bureau charged with investigating supernatural crimes.

With a simple touch, Artie Middleton can see, feel, and relive the stories held by objects. The last missing person’s case he assisted on left him bedridden, recovering from the same wounds as the victim. His power is one that few would envy. Now a police detective shows up at his door, needing help to find a missing seven-year-old boy, and Artie is torn. He fears what might happen if he agrees but knows the fate of the child if he doesn’t. Even more troubling for Artie is the detective’s effect on him. While Artie can’t allow skin-to-skin contact with a person for fear of what he might see, Ben makes him want to break all the rules he has in place to protect his sanity.
When the two begin working together, they find much more than they expected. And if they can’t stop the perpetrators, the body count will increase.
My Rating: 4 of 4 Stars (Based on Short&Light Read Category)

Of all the characters, the one I felt closest to or related to more was Ben. Not Artie. Somehow, Ben called out to me and just grabbed my heart. He was the odd man out of this group of paranormal individuals and the one to struggle the most. He is a cop and he is given charge of solving the mysterious disappearances of children found beaten to death after a few days. When the child of an important man is kidnapped seemingly from under the noses of the father, staff and bodyguard, Ben knows something other than a serial is going on. He resists the help of Artie Middleton, a psychic, but when he meets the man, he is not only convinced of the man's powers or abilities, he is also convinced this Artie may just be the man he will have a forever with. They go together, they try to solve the unsolvable and they face a horror neither expected.

As the time for Jamal ‘Jet’ Gorman’s first official pack meeting as the de facto Alpha nears, there are rumblings of others who would fight him to the death for the position. Jet isn't certain that's not a fitting way to exit this world...even if it puts the werewolves he's sworn to protect in the hands of a ruthless killer. A trip to the bayou with the ancient and enigmatic new vampire in town changes everything—in ways Jet would never have predicted. Now his new mission is safeguarding his late partner’s secret.
Nicolino Sanzio da Urbino—Nico to his friends, if he had any—has been undead for centuries, and given the betrayals in his own past, it shouldn't surprise him the depths some will go to in order to seize a power to which they have no claim. His new position with the Odd Squad provides a lot of latitude to dispense justice, so when he discovers a plot to rid the local pack of their second Alpha in as many months, Nico decides it's time to go hunting. That is until he meets Jet and everything gets…personal.
With hearts as hard as diamonds, neither man is seeking the odd connection that seems to flow between them—but the winds of change blowing through the Crescent City seem to have everyone on edge—and not all challenges are as simple as they seem. With more and more monsters coming out of the closet, only time will tell if these two survive long enough to play the hand they’ve been dealt—before they become dust in the wind.

My Rating: 4 of 4 Stars (Based on Short&Light Read Category)

If Ben is my favorite, I have to admit, Nic and Jet set my heart on fire. They are just... ooooohhhhhwheeee!! Sorry, but I think I just spilled the beans: I am a sucker for weres and vamps.

So here we have Jet, the poor guy who suddenly lost his beloved alpha and finds himself the acting alpha. Well, he is in fact alpha, but there are those who challenge his authority thinking a made were is not alpha material over a born were. Then we have this strong vampire in the form of Nico who is introduced as the new head of the Odd Squad which job it is to handle paranormal cases.

Neither men expected to be friends or even work together but they are and do. As for being lovers, well, they will be but not in this installment. You'll have to find all that out in the second one. Right now, they both have to deal with the difficulties a new alpha faces as well as a were pack which morale has fallen. Allies? Friends? Potential lovers? To be continued...
