Title: A Trust to Follow
Author: Diana Waters
Genre: Gay Romance, Historical/Fantasy

Prince Daymon is an Evoker—possessor of rare and feared magical powers.
When he is captured by bandits who plan to use his gifts for their own benefit he must depend upon his lover to come to his rescue.Rhyder is captain of Daymon’s personal guard and the legendary ‘Lion of the West’, but can he reach the man he loves before it’s too late?
He cried when she died and couldn’t stop. He cried so much that the rain came, unnatural days of rain that drowned animals and spoiled food. When he wouldn’t stop and when people threatened to take him away somewhere if he did not, Daylor gave up trying to comfort him and simply buried Daymon’s face in his chest to smother the cries.
The funeral ceremony could not be held outside—a blight on tradition that angered the king and caused ripples of unease among the palace inhabitants. It was bad luck, they said, and glanced at Daymon in undisguised apprehension. But the water was too high, and the matter of his mother’s body could not wait, so the funeral was held in the Great Hall, which dripped and creaked ominously.
Halfway through the ceremony, when he walked with Daylor to put the smelly white flowers atop the altar, Daymon glimpsed his mother’s hand beneath the shroud and began to scream.
He screamed until he couldn’t move or think or breathe—until Daylor, who was still holding his hand, was on the ground with blood appearing from his nose, until the glass windows shattered and the walls and ceiling groaned. When the lightning appeared, somebody finally managed to get close enough to deal Daymon a ringing blow, shutting him up long enough for his attendants to hurry him away.

My Rating: 3.5 of 4 Stars
A Trust to Follow is a really short read and yet there is a whole lot of story going on here. This is told in different timelines so it may not be to your liking. I am not bothered by it so was able to follow the plot without trouble.
The long and short of it is, Daymon offers himself in exchange for a little girl's life. He is taken and the rescue happens without his knowledge. He loses himself to his memories, thinking of the past and his lover, the Captain of the guards, Rhyder who he is led to believe has died. The despair he feels for his loss, the what ifs come into play, that was really well done.
When the end comes, it was too brief. I finished this in half an hour although technically this is a novella. This means that it was quite a fast read which reveals to me the plot was fast paced. For such a short story, well for me, there is a whole lot going on.
What I want now is something to follow this up. I want to know what happens next, what happens to both Rhyder and Daymon who make a decision that surprises this reader.
